Both TOEFL® Primary and TOEFL® Junior are designed based on the latest research on young learner English language assessment conducted by the world’s largest and leading test development agency, ETS. They support teaching and learning by giving information about student abilities in relation to widely accepted international standards.
Testing results in detailed score reports with proficiency descriptors and recommended next steps for learning. A level on the internationally used Common European Framework of Reference is also provided, allowing ready placement across curricula and assigning of appropriate textbooks. A Lexile® Reading measure makes it easy to find books and articles that best match students’ English abilities. The Lexile database includes hundreds of thousands of books searchable by interest areas.
TOEFL® Primary offers two levels of Reading and Listening testing for students starting at age 8; tests are paper-based and take one hour to complete. Step 1 is designed for students in the earlier stages of learning, while Step 2 is for those who have developed some communicative skills. There is also an optional online Speaking test available, which takes approximately twenty minutes to complete and which is given on specific dates (Step 1 and Step 2 tests are available year-round, with multiple forms allowing repeat administrations.)
TOEFL® Junior is an approximately two-hour test covering listening comprehension, language form and meaning, and reading comprehension. Multiple forms are available for year-round testing. An optional online Speaking testing is available on fixed dates.
