EMPOWERING WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS

Building on the success of several training programs for women in law and business, Amideast partnered with Citi Foundation to launch the Arab Women’s Entrepreneurship Project (AWEP), a six-year initiative that would provide business basics training, coaching, and mentoring to nearly 300 aspiring women entrepreneurs in Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, and the UAE. IMPROVING EDUCATION OUTCOMES IN LEBANON’S PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Amideast supported two successive USAID-funded initiatives to improve education outcomes in Lebanon by enhancing teacher and student performance, increasing community and parent involvement, and improving the learning environment. In the first Developing Rehabilitation Assistance to Schools and Teachers Improvement (D-RASATI) project, it led the introduction of extracurricular and community engagement activities that support school improvement. In D-RASATI II, it provided leadership development opportunities for principals and other school-improvement team members and led extracurricular activity components to strengthen the public school system.

ADDRESSING WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES IN MOROCCO

Morocco’s national phosphates company OCP Groupe, through its charitable arms OCP Foundation and Phosboucraa Foundation, selected Amideast to develop an employability skills development program in urban areas where it operates. ADVANCING EMPLOYABILITY THROUGH "SKILLS FOR SUCCESS"

In response to the skills gap pervasive throughout the MENA, Amideast developed its Skills for Success® curriculum to provide youth with training in the skills that employers most-often cite as lacking among job seekers, including English language, ICT/computer skills, personal competencies, and professional skills. Labeling by the Union for the Mediterranean in 2014 enabled Amideast to pilot Skills for Success with high- school leavers in Morocco, Jordan, and Lebanon. Thereafter, Skills for Success programming has focused on university graduates, the regional demographic that, having the highest unemployment rates, is most likely to benefit from the program.

CONTRIBUTING TO WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT IN EGYPT

Amideast was awarded the Public University Scholarships program, a high-impact component of the USAID-funded U.S.-Egypt Higher Education Initiative (HEI). By enabling nearly 700 deserving young Egyptian women and men to access excellence programs at leading Egyptian public universities, it has contributed significantly to the development of a workforce capable of enhancing Egypt's development. No less important has been the program's expansion of access to higher education for Egyptians with disabilities, breaking barriers through scholarship awards to individual students and by supporting the establishment of disability centers at 20 Egyptian universities.

BUILDING LOCAL CAPACITY FOR DEVELOPMENT

While local community service organizations (CSOs) can be the backbone of economic and social development, many regional CSOs lack the capacity to develop and implement impactful programs that target the root causes of problems in their communities. With support from the U.S. Department of State, Amideast built the capacity of 18 youth-focused CSOs in Tunisia through the three-year Building Local Associations for Development and Innovation (BLADI) project in areas such as financial management, project design, governance, and monitoring and evaluation. In 2020, Amideast launched the Civil Society Mini-Grant (CSMG) Program, with funding from the Yemen Affairs Unit’s Public Affairs Section, to help promote peace and reconciliation processes in Yemen by building the capacity of local associations in similar skill areas.
