American Language Centers (ALC)

American Language Centers in Ma’an, Mafraq, Irbid, and East Amman will enable thousands of Jordanians to improve their English language proficiency, enhance their cultural awareness and engage in the peaceful exchange of ideas, ultimately fostering greater opportunities for meaningful employment, career advancement, and expanded cross-cultural understanding. ALC English and cultural programs are designed to empower individuals with the knowledge, attitudes, English language skills, and 21st-century skills such as critical thinking and problem-solving to thrive in Jordan’s labor market.

The American Language Centers are funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs Office of Assistance Coordination in fulfillment of its commitment to youth economic development in Jordan. It is managed by Amideast/Jordan in partnership with three Jordanian organizations: Al Qantara Center for Human Resources Development, New Approach for Training and Development (NATD), and the Jordan Hashemite Fund for Human Development (JOHUD).

As Jordan pursues its 2022 Economic Growth Plan, the skills gap between the needs of the labor market and the abilities of job-seeking youth, women, people with disabilities, and working adults will continue to widen. The American Language Centers will support the Jordanian government’s efforts to close this skills gap through innovative cultural programming and quality English language instruction that is affordable and inclusive.

As of October 1, 2024, Amideast Jordan has concluded its role in managing the American Language Centers (ALCs) in Jordan. This transition marks the end of a successful partnership where Amideast provided support to enhance English language skills and foster cross-cultural understanding across the Kingdom. The grant was funded by the US Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs - State Department and implemented in coordination with the strategic objectives of the Regional English Language Office (RELO) at the Embassy.

Moving forward, the American Language Centers’ activities will be carried out by local organizations that have been supported by Amideast, over the past two years during the ALC Program’s lifetime, to continue delivering high-quality, affordable, and inclusive English language education, ensuring the sustainability of the ALCs' impact in their communities.

Amideast wishes to thank the NEA, RELO, our trainers, partners, participants, and the community for their support, and look forward to seeing the continued success of the ALCs
