The tourism and hospitality industry had a record year in 2019 and comprised nearly 20% of Jordan’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) that year, employing thousands in the sectors across the kingdom and generating millions in revenue for the economy.
The near complete worldwide shut down in response to COVID 19 pandemic in March 2020 has had profound and far-reaching impact on Jordan’s tourism and hospitality sector, with hotel closing, tour guide business shuttered indefinitely, and an only marginal return of tourists to Jordan in 2021, as different parts of the world still grapple with effect of local outbreaks and continuing travel restrictions.
Implemented in Amman and aligned with the EBRD’s 2025 Jordan Country Strategy, the program will assist 80 Jordanian and Syrian jobseekers to re-train on key language and soft skills to be competitive applicants in adjacent sectors in Jordan where skills similar to the tourism and hospitality sector are in demand, such as customer service, logistics, sales and more.
