Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP 2008)

AMIDEAST is currently accepting applications for the Iraqi Young Leaders Exchange Program (IYLEP), a one month scholarship program for high-school age students to participate in a leadership development and civic education program in the U.S during Summer 2008. IYLEP is funded by the U.S. Department of State, Educational & Cultural Affairs Bureau, and administered by AMIDEAST. IYLEP scholarships cover all major expenses, including airfare, room and board, and health insurance.

The preliminary application deadline for IYLEP 2008 is Thursday January 3, 2008.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT IF YOU ARE SELECTED AS AN IYLEP FINALIST, YOU MUST OBTAIN AN IRAQI G PASSPORT BY MARCH 1, 2008!

As an IYLEP student, you will have a unique opportunity to:

  • Participate in a leadership development & civic education program for one month (Summer 2008) in the U.S.
  • Live with an American family
  • Participate in a youth leadership training program and youth camp
  • Experience U.S. culture and society first hand
  • Improve your English
  • Make new friends
  • Help Americans learn about your country

Applicants to the IYLEP program must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a record of high academic achievement (a grade point average of at least 70% or "good" for the preceding two years
  • Demonstrate flexibility and commitment to promoting cross cultural understanding
  • Must be born between September 1, 1990 and June 15, 1993
  • Meet minimum English proficiency requirement (a grade point average of at least 80% or "very good" in English classes and a score of 40 or above on the Secondary Level English Proficiency exam)
  • Are nationals of Iraq and currently living in Iraq
  • Are not U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents, and were not born in the United States
  • Have not previously participated in a U.S.-government sponsored exchange program

The preliminary application deadline for IYLEP 2008 is Thursday January 3, 2008; submit via HARD COPY ONLY to one of the following locations:

Erbil: AMIDEAST Office, Ainkawa, near Restaurant Italiano, phone 225 0054
Baghdad: AMIDEAST Drop Box at the Babel Hotel
Basra: AMIDEAST Drop Box at the University of Basra, Bab Al-Zubair Compound, Institute of Live Languages
