Shell Development – Oman recently gave AMIDEAST/Oman a grant to strengthen women’s leadership skills, with a particular focus on volunteerism. The training program, which will be implemented in five regions throughout Oman, builds on the directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said, Sultan of Oman, who has urged that development projects be linked with local communities and that they enhance the role of women.
With Shell’s Corporate Social Responsibility funding, AMIDEAST will conduct a series of five-day training programs for 150 women throughout the Sultanate. The “Leadership Essentials” workshop is uniquely designed to help leaders-to-be to prepare for the challenges and responsibilities of leadership. Through role-playing, self assessment, and other leadership training scenarios, participants will explore leadership roles as strategist, change agent, coach, manager, communicator, and team member. The training aims to enable the women to realize their potential and inspire others as they work together on common goals, identifying ways that they can address community needs and give back to society.
AMIDEAST is working closely with Shell and with the Ministry of Social Development in planning the program, which will be launched in October in tandem with the first annual Omani Women’s Day (October 17). Using networks of Omani Women’s Associations, Chambers of Commerce and regional government offices, AMIDEAST is now accepting applications for the program in each of the five locations where the program will be offered: Muscat, Nizwa, Salalah, Sohar and Sur.
Last year, Kalimat al Mashari enrolled in a unique job-training program at AMIDEAST/Oman designed to enhance the work skills and self-confidence of Omani women like her — high school graduates from underserved backgrounds who are unemployed.
For Kalimat, the training was what she needed to take the challenging step of starting her own business. And this summer, she returned to AMIDEAST to take a follow-up course in entrepreneurship — a program that she credits with giving her “the courage and self-esteem I need to run my business successfully.”
Nearly 60 women have benefited from AMIDEAST’s partnership with the Embassy of the Netherlands to reach out to underserved women in Oman to empower them through a combination of basic job-skills training, career guidance, and — this summer — leadership and entrepreneurship components.
That the initiative is meeting a need was clear soon after the first program was announced in fall 2008. Some 180 women applied, requiring a careful selection process to fill the small number of available seats — a class of 30 women, who ranged in age from 19 to 36 and came from the regions of Al Dakhliya, Al Batinah, Al Dahira and Muscat. Moreover, class attendance was 100 percent throughout the 320 hours covering intensive English language and IT skills training, workplace etiquette, project work, field trips, cv-writing workshops, mock interviews, a career fair, and guest speakers and interaction with professionals in a variety of sectors.
Fulbright Foreign Student Program was established by the US Congress in 1946. It was founded to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchange. AMIDEAST administers the Fulbright Foreign Student Program for the Middle East and North Africa on behalf of the US Department of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. This highly prestigious scholarship program is a two-year fellowship, designed to give graduates of four-year Bachelors degree or Masters degree programs the opportunity to pursue a graduate degree at a US university.
