Amideast Country Director Dana Shuqom Receives “World of Difference” Award

Dana Shuqom accepts her award at the TIAW Global Forum, on March 26, 2014, in Washington, DC.

Dana Shuqom, Amideast’s country director for Jordan, was honored by The International Alliance for Women (TIAW) for her efforts to advance women’s economic empowerment in Jordan. The TIAW awarded her its “World of Difference 100 Award” during its Global Forum, held March 26, 2014, in Washington, DC.  The award recognizes men and women who have advanced women’s issues, either on a local or global level. Recipients of the award include Cherie Blair a year ago and the first lady of Namibia this year.

Over the past decade, Ms. Shuqom has been involved in increasing access and membership of young women in business associations; helping women open or expand their businesses; and developing mentorship and training programs that help underprivileged women escape the cycle of poverty.  Currently, in her capacity as the head of Amideast’s Jordan office, she oversees the Arab Women's Entrepreneurship Project (AWEP) in Jordan, a program that provides training, mentorship, and other support to women who aspire to entrepreneurship. Now in its second year, the Citi Foundation-funded project has benefited 40 Jordanian women. She will also oversee the implementation of Skills for Success, an employability training program launched by Amideast with the support of the Union for the Mediterranean to assist unemployed young women bridge the gap between secondary school and the workplace.

In announcing its selection of Ms. Shuqom to receive the World of Difference 100 Award, the TIAW noted that “[s]he is a role model and great source of inspiration to Jordanian females. It is in no small part because of her leadership role and championing of women’s economic empowerment that Amideast Jordan is considered a great employer of choice for women.”
