of Business and interned at the Longaberger

In
2004, high school exchange students from
Palestine and Lebanon join forces to record
an innovative CD-ROM for teaching Arabic
to Americans. In Morocco, an American student
counts community service in an orphanage
as one of her most meaningful experiences.
A teenage boy in Aden takes English language
training that his family could never afford
on its own, while young girls in Lebanons
Bekaa Valley are introduced to the print
and computer resources available in a local
library. Small grants help civil society
organizations improve the environment in
Lebanon and train election monitors in the
West Bank and Gaza.
AMIDEAST was instrumental in making each
one of these opportunities possible. Founded
in 1951 as American Friends of the Middle
East, AMIDEAST is a private, nonprofit organization
dedicated to strengthening mutual understanding
and cooperation between Americans and the
peoples of the Middle East and North Africa.
With a network of field offices throughout
the Middle East and North Africa, AMIDEAST
assists hundreds of people every day through
our varied programs and services. These
include professional and English language
training, educational advising, standardized
test registration and administration, technical
assistance for institutional development,
and administration of scholarships and student
exchange programs both in the region and
in the United States. For educators and
students in the United States, we are an
important source of information about the
region.
The following pages record AMIDEASTs many
activities and accomplishments in 2004 in
pursuit of our mission.
